Living
from the Heart
Indigenous people live naturally within nature
in a reciprocal relationship with Spirit. The
indigenous traditions of the Andes and Amazon
are an ancient way of living in harmony within
ourselves, our communities and with nature. Although
we were not born in their world, we can learn
to live more fully from our hearts in harmony
and peace. Within each community, there are those
that we call “shamans” who function
as bridges between spirit and matter, between
individuals and their communities for the enrichment
of the miracle that we call life. This path of
experiental shamanism, involves a transformational
process of going deeply within and learning by
experience, of moving from our heads where we
think about our lives, to our hearts where we
feel our feelings, and finally to our navel where
we learn to live in the moment from our essence
expressing our natural gifts.
Most
of us spend our lives in our minds fulfilling
the stories that we were taught to live by family,
peers, religion, and society when we were children.
Frequently, we get stuck in habitual patterns
of thinking and feeling expending vast amounts
of energy to fulfill other people's expectations.
Although we may have forgotten that we were the
ones who created these stories, we can learn to
change our stories thereby experiencing change
within. Within our hearts, there is a mystery,
the pause between heartbeats, that can't be described
in words yet can be experienced by everyone. Within
us, there is a source that is calling us home,
to the home that we all yearn for, the home that
waits for us within our innermost being. If we
are willing, we can let go of who we are not to
return to our origin to experience our essence.
Despite
the many challenges that take up our time in today’s
fast paced world, we can learn to create and maintain
balance and harmony within so we can live in a
state of joy and happiness. There are many practical
tips, exercises and energetic practices within
indigenous traditions that can help us gently
move from reactionary living to actively dancing
with life in the present moment. When we live
in the present, letting go and allowing our lives
to unfold from our essence, then our lives simplify
as we achieve our natural state of inner peace
and harmony. Along the way in this inner transformational
process we discover our true nature and the gifts
that are waiting within us to be developed and
shared with others.
